We're delighted to announce the arrival of forward Marcus Marshall.

Marshall (33) has vast experience at all levels of the game, having featured in the Premier League for Blackburn Rovers as well as throughout the Football League and National League with clubs including Rotherham United, Bury, Grimsby Town and Morecambe.

Marshall was a youth product of Sam Allardyce’ Blackburn Rovers side. He was added to the club's first team squad in August 2008 ahead of the 2008–09 season. On 27 August 2008 the teenager was handed him his first team debut when he came on as a 76th-minute substitute for Morten Gamst Pedersen in a 4–1 victory over Grimsby Town in the 1st Round of the League Cup. The game would be Marshall's only outing for the Blackburn first team and he spent the rest of the campaign in the reserves.

On 23 January 2010, Marshall was signed on a month's emergency loan by Rotherham United. On 30 June, Marshall became a free agent when it was confirmed he would not be offered a new contract by Blackburn. He agreed to join Rotherham permanently on 1 July. Marshall scored his first career goal in Rotherham's 4–1 League Cup First Round defeat to Peterborough United. His first competitive league goal eventually came in a 2–2 draw with Northampton Town on 23 November 2010. He joined fellow League Two side Macclesfield Town on a one-month emergency loan in January 2012, scoring on his debut against Cheltenham Town, and was released by Rotherham in May 2012.

In the summer of 2020 Basford United paid Matlock Town an undisclosed fee for MM after he’d top scored for the Gladiators in the curtailed 19/20 season. Less than 18 months later Basford United have agreed the sale of Marcus Marshall back to Matlock Town for an undisclosed fee.

He only played 12 games in the annulled 2020-21 campaign for the Ambers. But despite injuries and suspension, the striker made 24 appearances and scored three times in all competitions the following season.

The Nottingham born goal scorer played his football at Mickleover FC last season.

Talking to Marshall he believes the club can make a real push for promotion: “After hearing from the management team about the goals and aspirations of where they want to take the club. It aligned with what i want to do. The fact that it’s a local club makes it that much better. UP THE BADGERS!!!!!!!!”

Having grown up with the club newest addition DT feels Marcus will bring much needed experience: “It’s a huge statement of intent of what me and Bally want to be about moving forward.”

“I’ve grown up through school with Marshy and to be honest when we approached the conversation we thought we might be too ambitious with him being at Mickleover Sports last season but after speaking to Marcus him living locally, wanting to reduce travelling after such a good career so far professionally and at the top end of the non league pyramid it aligned perfectly.”

“Marshy will bring much needed experience, goals and will be a difference maker for us. The likes of Tommo, Etien, Terry and Cam have a perfect mentor and role model to work with - we’re under no illusions he could of got treble the amount of money that we have offered him at step 3 and above locally but we’re glad he has bought into our vision and wants to be a massive part of what we are doing moving forward as a club.”

“We know, and Marshy will know this type of signing makes noise which brings pressure for him to deliver but we want big players that can deliver in the biggest moments and he certain ticks those boxes, this is definitely a signing the Red Badgers fans should be excited about.”

Welcome Marcus!
