Eastwood CFC 3-0 Wisbech Town

Zander Shayler19 Jan - 17:23

The Red Badgers extended their impressive unbeaten home run under Willis Francis with a commanding 3–0 victory over Wisbech Town at Coronation Park.

Eastwood entered the game full of confidence after their recent win over Grantham Town, and the manager made two changes to the starting XI. Jake Wright and captain Aaron O’Connor returned to the side, while Toby Woodward was named on the bench.

The afternoon took an unfortunate early turn for O’Connor, who was forced off with a calf injury after just ten minutes. Joel Stevens replaced the skipper, and Eastwood continued to settle into the contest.

Early chances fell to Stevens and Phil Watt, both heading narrowly off target, while Terry Hawkridge tested the Wisbech goalkeeper with a low effort straight at him.

Wisbech’s best opening of the first half came from a Sam Bennett free kick. Sam Wilson made the initial save, but Rodrigo Goncalves reacted quickly and poked goalwards, only for Jake Wright to clear off the line. Wright would go on to make a remarkable three goal-line clearances in the first half alone to keep Eastwood in front.

Eastwood made the breakthrough on 23 minutes through the in-form Logan Dimmock-Fox. Hawkridge and Blake combined well in midfield before Blake laid the ball off to Dimmock-Fox, who unleashed an unstoppable strike from just outside the ‘D’ that flew into the top corner.

The hosts continued to press. Hawkridge released Stevens down the right, whose cross was turned behind for a corner, and Stevens himself had two efforts blocked after weaving into the box.

Wisbech threatened again on 35 minutes when Luke Harris squared for Amir Ward, but once more Wright was on hand to clear from the line. Moments later, Goncalves cut the ball back for Bennett, whose close-range effort was also heroically cleared by Wright.

Eastwood doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time. Hawkridge’s quick free kick found Tyler Blake, whose shot was blocked but fell kindly for Phil Watt. The defender initially swung and missed with his right, but adjusted brilliantly to volley home with his left for his sixth goal of the season, sending Eastwood into the break 2–0 ahead.

The Red Badgers started the second half with the same authority. Stevens continued to cause problems down the right wing, using his pace and skill to stretch the Wisbech defence. One such cross found Theo Flanagan, but his shot was blocked.

The third goal arrived on 63 minutes and was again created by Dimmock-Fox. Picking the ball up wide, he jinked into the penalty area and clipped a superb ball into the path of Theo Flanagan, who controlled it brilliantly in mid-air before smashing it into the roof of the net to seal the win.

Tyler Blake forced a late save in stoppage time, but the result was already beyond doubt as Eastwood closed out an emphatic 3–0 victory.

A thoroughly professional performance from the Red Badgers, who remain unbeaten at home under Willis Francis.
